On this Valentine’s Day 2009

Taken from Sheldon VanAuken’s book A Severe Mercy

“It is, I think, that we are all so

alone

in what lies

deepest

in our souls, so unable to find

the words,

and perhaps the courage to speak with

unlocked hearts,

that we don’t know at all

that it is the same with others.”

  1. I wanted to reply to this last night, but it was too late when I read it to form cogent sentences.

I love this quote– thank you for finding it. I think there is something therapeutic about being in the same boat as someone, even if it’s a sinking one and neither of you know how to make it better. The simple knowledge that someone else is there and gets it is a huge comfort.
