Homesick, Part I

It’s the 4th of July weekend.  And I can’t help but be a little bit homesick.

Homesick for my friends and family.  For multiple snow cones with my friends.

Making lemon shake-ups with my mom.  Drinking several lemon shake-ups.  The big white pavilion with so many friendly and familiar faces.  Looking at all the displays at the craft booth.  Seeing Dad’s Corvette win again at the annual car show.

Eating burgers fresh off the grill.  Corn on the cob with the same cob-holders that we’ve had since I was a little girl.  Making potato salad with Mom.  Eating most of the potato salad before the day is over.

Playing in the backyard with my dogs.  Putting red, white, and blue bandanas on all the puppies.  Setting off bottle rockets and drawing in the sky with sparklers.  Watching our neighbor’s (illegal) fireworks display after the town’s big show.

Our small town’s mildly-impressive firework display.  Putting out a blanket with Mom and Dad in the same spot every year.  Guessing which color the firework will be before it explodes.  Listening to Dad say “OOooh” and “Aaaah.”

Homesick for big open skies and quiet nights occasionally interrupted by the booms of fireworks off in the distance.
