Bright Yellow Box

Tonight at the grocery store, I saw a young mother and her toddler.

The toddler was wearing a cheerful pink coat and floral pants.  The mom was walking with her daughter, pointing out the different grocery items in the store.  I am, by no means, interested in having a BabyAnomaly any time soon.  In fact, the best kind of baby is the one you hold for about 10 minutes and then hand right back to Mom.  While we’re at it, the best kind of kid is the kid I get to teach for about 2 hours and then hand back to the regular classroom teacher.

Anyway.

Because I didn’t write a list before this particular shopping trip, I was wandering the store like a lost puppy… so I bumped into this mother and little girl about three different times.

The third time I saw them, the mother was trying to get the toddler to turn down a particular aisle, but the little girl had her eyes set on something bright yellow.  She was focused.  She pointed at that item with determination.

The mom tried, again, to have her daughter follow her down the frozen foods aisle, but the girl wouldn’t budge.

Finally the little girl said, “Buh buh!”

She was pointing directly at the yellow boxes of butter.

The mother and I made eye contact and at the same time we giggled and said, almost triumphantly,  “Butter!”

Then the woman dropped to one knee and hugged her little girl.  “Yes, that’s right! Butter! Oh, you are so smart.”

It was such a grey and dreary day.  It has been such a grey and dreary April.  I am so glad that I was able to witness that moment.

Butter.

So perfect.

  1. Someone’s been watching Paula Deen. 🙂

    • Ha! Or maybe she is the future Paula Deen. But without the Southern attitude. 🙂

  2. You’re so right–it has been SUCH a dreary April. I am so ready for summer in Chicago.
